How massage can benefit your training programme

- Massage Therapist Regan Gill explains

Combining both personal training and massage can have a powerful impact on your training outcomes.

Throughout any training programme we may find ourselves training below our optimum levels. The reasons for this can vary greatly from injury, to training plateaus, to fatigue and more. It is at these points where you can truly benefit from the effects of an experienced massage therapist.

Through massage, muscle and connective tissue are positively impacted encouraging:

  • Improved performance
  • Reduced overuse and repetitive strain probability
  • Decreased recovery time between workouts
  • Increased range of movement and flexibility
  • Improved circulation and lymphatic function
  • Increased oxygen uptake in the musculoskeletal system
  • Restored muscular imbalances

Massage therapy affects every system in your body. Aside from feeling good, research indicates that massage reduces stress, lowers your heart rate, lowers blood pressure, increases circulation, increases lymph flow, aids in elimination of toxins and increases endorphins - the body's natural pain killers.

Massage therapy is much more than a one-off treatment for a particular issue, or even a mere luxury. Research shows that regular massage therapy improves range of motion, reduces recovery time, increases muscle tone, and increases flexibility.

Since massage acts as an "auxiliary heart" by increasing circulation, it facilitates the elimination of toxins and other metabolic wastes generated as a byproduct of resistance training. Additionally, massage therapy reduces the time that it takes the body to heal an injury.
